Tanzania’s untamed landscapes are the ultimate haven for birding aficionados.

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha & Transfer to Tarangire NP

  • Activity: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in Arusha. Meet your guide and transfer directly to the Tarangire National Park area. Subject to arrival time, we will enjoy some local birding opportunities en route.
  • Accommodation: Lodge near Tarangire NP.

Day 2: Tarangire National Park

  • Activity: A full day dedicated to slow-paced birding and big game viewing within Tarangire National Park. Known for its gigantic baobab trees and massive elephant herds, the park is also a birding paradise, hosting over 500 species, including specialized dry-country birds.
  • Focus: Big game viewing, photography, and focused birding.
  • Accommodation: Lodge near Tarangire NP.

Day 3: Tarangire to Ngorongoro Highlands

  • Activity: Morning check-out from our Tarangire lodge. We drive toward the Ngorongoro Highlands, arriving in time for lunch at the charming Gibbs Farm. The afternoon features a specialized Bird Walk in the high elevation forests above Gibbs Farm, seeking out unique forest and highland species.
  • Focus: Birding and high-altitude forest bird walks.
  • Accommodation: Tloma Lodge, Karatu Village.

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater Excursion

  • Activity: An exciting day excursion to the floor of the majestic Ngorongoro Crater. The high concentration of wildlife and varied habitats offer phenomenal opportunities for both big game viewing and intense birding. After a full day of excitement, we ascend the crater walls back to the Karatu Village.
  • Focus: Birding, Big game viewing, and photography.
  • Accommodation: Tloma Lodge, Karatu Village.

Day 5: Lake Manyara National Park & Transfer to Arusha

  • Activity: We prepare our own picnic lunches from the lodge and drive down the Great Rift Valley escarpment into Lake Manyara National Park. The rest of the day is dedicated to birding and big game viewing, focusing on the abundant waterbirds, pelicans, and the famous flamingo flocks. In the late afternoon, we drive back to Arusha for overnight.
  • Focus: Waterfowl and rift valley species birding, game viewing.
  • Accommodation: Lodge in Arusha.

Day 6: Option Day: Endemic Larks or Arusha NP

  • Activity: A flexible day to maximize your sightings:
    • Option 1: Endemic Lark Search (Recommended): Visit the less-famous but critical Oldonyo Sambu Plains north of Arusha, specifically seeking the rare and localized Short-toed Lark (Calandrella brachydactyla) and other dry-country endemics.
    • Option 2: Arusha National Park: Visit the beautiful Arusha National Park for diverse montane and swamp species.
  • Focus: Endemic and specialized bird sightings.
  • Accommodation: Lodge in Arusha.

Day 7: Departure

  • Activity: Day subject to your flight schedule. Transfer from your lodge to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your onward connections, concluding your incredible Tanzanian birding safari.
